Happy new year my friends,
Happy to report that there are several exciting new projects in the works:
- a new solo CD is currently being recorded. I am about 50% done and will complete the other 50% during a marathon tracking & mixing session in February. This CD, tentatively entitled "Purification/Dissolution", is my first solo CD since 2008's "In Memory of the Labyrinth System" and is going to be quite different than that album. Instead of using the cut-up techniques of that music this new CD will focus more on the way that I approach my live solo shows. Each of the pieces on the new CD will deal a lot with the balance between the acoustic and the amplified clarinet with effects. I am not doing an edits or overdubs and instead focusing on getting really rich, detailed recordings of live performances. This is going to be unlike anything that I've released thus far and I am excited about that. I will put up a preview track soon. I don't know how or when this will be released and for the moment I am happy about that. I learned with my last record "Fire Sign" that creating music with no time constraints and without the aim of trying to please anyone works out well for me. That being said, if any labels out there are interested... Get at me.
-Speaking of the differences between my live and my studio approaches i am currently writing an article that deals with this very topic for the next installment of John Zorn's Arcana: Musicians on Music book series. I am really enjoying the process of reflecting on my working methods and inspirations and being forced to articulate them in a formal setting has proven very illuminating.
-I have a couple of new collaborations in the works. One is with one of my favorite composers of my generation Mario Diaz de Leon. We've played a couple of shows so far and will reconvene for an evening of audio masochism at the Stone on January 24th at 10:00 pm for the series that Mario curated on behalf of the artistic collective Shinkoyo. I would highly recommend coming and bringing some ear plugs. I plan to play bass clarinet that night through a 200 watt Fender guitar amp. Ya dig? I don't know where this project is gonna go but I have every intention of playing more shows and making a CD.
During that same series at the Stone I will play a short piece with clarinet maestro Joshua Rubin on 1/29. Josh is a remarkable musician and is also one of the driving forces behind the International Contemporary Ensemble. He is a virtuoso of the highest level and needless to say I feel it a great honor to be performing with him.
-I am happy to report that "Fire Sign" made a lot of "best of" lists for 2011 including lists by NPR and the New York City Jazz Record and I thank everyone who bought the CD, listened and had nice things to say. Here are a couple links to some year end lists were it was re-reviewed:

-The new Kayo Dot album "Gamma Knife" was released the other day. I recorded a portion of this during a live show at Littlefield in Brooklyn this past October. My contribution to this recording with minimal beyond words but I am overwhelmed with pride to have any involvement in such great music and for$5 it's a god damned bargain that you should jump at right now! www.kayodot.bandcamp.com
-In addition to the upcoming stuff mentioned above i have been writing some more large scale work that, again, has very little in common with my previous work. I'm really excited about the direction in which this music is going. I have put in some proposals for different performance and recording opportunities and hopefully in 2013/14 some of this music will be heard.
2011 was a tough year for the world and for many people that I know. Here's to hoping that 2012 proves to be a much more peaceful and productive year for us all, filled with love magic and mystery.

Here is a nice review of "Fire Sign" in the newest edition of Paris Transatlantic. Thanks to Dan Warburton for the kind words.
Because Dan is the second critic to take exception to something that I wrote in the liner notes to "Fire Sign" I feel the need to explain my "making art out of garbage" comment. When I wrote that part of the process behind the CD was "making art out of garbage" I was making a direct reference to Jack Smith and John Zorn. In all of my work, music and writing, I like to make very direct and indirect references and I guess that in this case I seemed to have failed at making one that many people would get. I was in no way making a statement about the musicianship of the players involved in the record. I tend not to work with people whose work I find to be garbage!
Thanks for reading and happy holidaze...

I was pretty shocked to see that Fire Sign was recently reviewed in Downbeat. I was even more shocked that it got four stars! thanks to Peter Margasak for the kind words.

I am extremely excited & proud to announce the release of my newest CD entitled “Fire Sign”. I currently have and am selling copies and from now until September 15th I will be including a special bonus for any copies purchased through me via this website. Between now and then any purchase of “Fire Sign” will include either a free copy of my 2007 release “Big Exploitation” or a mystery CDR of unreleased music. I am not disclosing what the music on the CDR will be but I promise that it will most definitely:
a. be really fucked up
b. come in bizarre home-made packaging
c. probably not be of album release quality
d. might feature some really great musicians
e. will definitely feature a ton of samples from “Gummo”
But wait, there’s more!
Any order placed between now and September 15th will also include a link to a free download of album commentary for “Fire Sign”- WOW!
When you place your order just let me know which bonus CD you would prefer to receive
Hoping to see you all soon

howdy y'all...
so as it turns i'm just as flaky with updating this website as i was with my old one. sorry :(
i do actually update my monthly recommendations of food, music, books and television. by the way you should really be watching treme. it is truly the greatest show ever made. so good...
i've been damn busy this first half of 2011:
a new record with tartar lamb 2, which is collaboration between myself and toby driver & members kayo dot will finally be released in physical form VERY soon. we've already received the tests which had their issues and seemed to be part of an endless list of delays. uuugh... the record was funded completely by fan donations via kickstarter and should be ready for shipment before summer is over. in the meantime you can check out www.tartarlamb.com for mp3s and streaming audio. i am really proud of this very strange and bleak recording. toby and crew are amazing to work with, musicians of the first order, and i can say that this music, special beyond words, manages to be breathtakingly sad, terrifying and even humorous all at once.
speaking of tartar lamb 2, i spent the first part of 2011 on tour with those schnooks and kayo dot in europe. we played something like 27 shows in as many days and in addition to playing with tl2 i was playing a solo set every night AND doing front of house sound for KD. oy... the tour was a total blast, if not exhausting, and i am now planning another tour in europe for next winter with the amazing jakub. dates will be announced as they come in. get in touch if you're interested in booking.
i have a new record coming out at the end of the summer on tzadik entitled "fire sign". i am really, really proud of this one. in some ways it's kind of a sequel to my 2008 solo album "in memory of the labyrinth system" but instead of solo clarinet i apply the same editing and processing techniques used on IMOTLS to some of my favorite musicians: nate wooley, peter evans, tom blancarte, christopher hoffman, brian chase, sam kulik & harris eisenstadt. to me this record feels a lot more "mature" than most of my previous work. most of it was recorded at home and is as a personal a document as i've ever done. you can check out a composite preview track of the record above. scheduled release date is august 30th.
what else? i got married! crazy shit...
love

Welcome to my new website! I'm still getting everything set up, working out kinks, etc but I am happy to no longer be restricted by the limits of small file storage and Flash. My hope with the new website is to provide an immense amount of content and more regular updates via this blog. To that end please check out the "Listen" section which currently features 3 unreleased mp3s as well as the "Shows" section which has more information on some exciting upcoming concerts
